Changing Snow Conditions

With the current weather pattern, we are experiencing the full gamut of skiing, riding, driving and walking conditions.  These can range from mid-winter to late spring conditions.  During this time of year the snow can be vastly different in a relatively short amount of time.   There are a lot of things to think about to keep you safe and keep you playing all season.

Know what you are getting yourself into!

Ask the questions:

  • Is the snow groomed?
  • Is your run in the sun or the shade?
  • Is the snow windblown? Fresh? Heavy? Light? Crusty? Sunbaked? Wet? Dry?
  • What are the differences between the snow in the morning and afternoon?
  • What is the difference between the snow at the top and bottom of the mountain?
  • What natural and manmade obstacles may I encounter today?
  • What techniques do I need to use to navigate the snow safely?

Roads, Parking Lots and Sidewalks:

  • Are we in a freeze/melt cycle?
  • Did we get recent snowfall?
  • Does the surface look wet? Could it be ice?
  • Am I wearing the appropriate footwear?
  • Do I need to wear a traction device?

Am I using the Approved Routes?

  • Whether on the mountain or around the base areas, approved routes help to keep you safe.
  • Work with your manager if you are unaware of your approved routes.
  • On Mountain, approved routes will never cross under closure ropes!
